Youth in Revolt End Credits

Last summer I had the pleasure of working with Hornet director, Peter Sluszka, and an awesome group of animator’s on one of the six animated sequences that were done for The Weinstein Company’s major motion picture Youth in Revolt, starring Michael Cera and directed by Miguel Arteta. Only four out of the six sequences made it into the movie, which include’s both the opening sequence and end credits, but you can check out Director’s Cuts of all six on the Blu Ray’s Special features as well as Hornet’s website.

Exciting News and Updates

I just want to say a big thank you, and CONGRATULATIONS, to everyone I have had the pleasure working with over the past couple of months at FlickerLab. For those who haven’t heard yet, two of our recent projects, the BNY Mellon Bank spot, Innovation Driven, and The Wild Life – Episode 350, which is part of Flickerlab’s in house animated series, have each been awarded a Silver Telly Award in the 31st Annual Telly Awards Competition.

From the Telly Awards Press Release and Fact Sheet:

“The Telly Awards was founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.

The judges rate each entry on a 10-point scale. Generally, entries with a score from our judges of 9.0 or higher are awarded a “Silver Telly” statuette, our highest honor.”

Innovation Driven has also been awarded an Excellence in Animation in the Sponsored Films Category at the 41st ASIFA- East Animation Festival, and has officially been accepted into this years Animation Block Party, which will run from July 30th through August 1st, with Innovation Driven being screened August 1st, during Program 4 which begins at 4:30pm at the Bam Cinematek, in Brooklyn.

Innovation Driven unfortunately did not win the Saatchi & Saatchi and Aniboom, Nothing is Impossible Challenge Award, but it has been Ranked 2nd for the past few weeks now, and is STILL eligible to win the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced on July 15th. So if you haven’t Rated it, commented, “Like,” or shared it with friends and family, please do so. The ranking is determined by each of those mentioned methods, so do one or all of them. In order to Rate it, or Comment you must create an account and sign in on the Aniboom website. To do so, look at the top of the page, or click on the set of stars to the bottom right of the video.

So thank you to all who were involved for both projects, and GREAT JOB! And I will update everyone again on any other achievements either video may receive as we have entered them both in an number of festivals, along with a few other recent projects.

In a related note, two projects I worked on while at Dancing Diablo, Spike and Bubbles and The Emperor’s New Clothes were both awarded Excellence in Design in their respective catagories at the ASIFA East Animation Festival. Congrats Bea and everyone else at Dancing Diablo!

BNY Mellon Bank Spot and The Making of (UPDATED)

Here is the latest piece I did at Flickerlab which was developed by Concept Farm for BNY Mellon’s corporate event. I animated it traditionally on NAPKINS, and it was shot with a Nikon D300 using Dragon Stop Motion software. Harold Moss and I co-directed, Franklin Zitter produced and shot the behind the scenes, Audrey Skalkowski animated the FX, and shot the stop motion and Susan Godfrey helped out with the production management. David Wilson handled the sound design.

Life Drawing

Been about 5 years since I last did any life drawing from models, but I’m going to work hard to change that and make more of an effort to keep up with it, as well as keeping a sketchbook. Here is the product of the last 2 weeks courtesy of the ASIFA East drawing sessions, in no particular order. The only editing I did was to separate some of them and make separate jpgs….other than that I included the “good,” the bad and the ugly….Got lots of work to do..

Here are a few designs from a recent freelance project that I was pretty happy with. As I’ve said before, I do not consider myself a character designer, but I do like to try and make myself better. My most common goal I try to achieve when making up new characters, is to try and not make my character’s look like me. Fortunately, these were pretty successful in that, or at least I think so….at least apart from the bellies maybe…

Commuting Sketches

Finally had some time to put together these sketches from my commute to Brooklyn.

First: One of the bus drivers I see in the morning, who sports an awesome mullet, and is probably one of this nicest transit workers in NY. Always says “Good morning,” and “Have a nice day,” even on the ugliest of days. So here’s to you Bus Driver Lady…

Second: I saw this guy on the subway the other day, and I am sad to say that this is no exaggeration. (except for the socks and shoes which I didn’t get a good view of, although I am sure they were equally as flamboyant.) I dunno whether the coat was fur or not, but he looked like he stepped right out of P. Diddy Video….all 90lbs of him.
